Get ready to blast

The Raiden series is a pretty famous set of vertically scrolling shooters that update the likes of Xenon and Sky Shark to exciting effect. This is the third entry in the series but needs no knowledge of either Raiden or Raiden 2 to play it so if you like blowing merry hell out of aliens, this will be your cup of tea. There's probably some kind of plot about the nature of these aliens and how they have overrun the planet Earth but it's pretty inconsequential and all you need to know is how to kill them. The game itself is a fairly standard vertical shooter, with all the usual weapons upgrades to collect such as homing missiles, spread shots and various forms of laser, boss battle and so on. There are a few extra modes to try out as well as the standard single player campaign, including a two up mode, score attack and boss rush and which add in some nice variety. Apart from this though, this is very much business as usual for the genre but if all you're looking for is an intense vertical shooter, you can't go wrong here. The visuals are exactly as you would want from such a game, with some very cool environment and alien design, as well as some spectacular special effects which make the action rock even harder. The controls are slick, intuitive and responsive, just as you need with this kind of thing. Sound design too is well implemented, with plenty of cool explosions and other effects to make the action even more immersive. Although there's nothing really original here, Raiden III does exactly what it sets out to do, which is provide a rollicking good time so if that's what you're after, take a look here.
