What's it like on the other side?

Anyone who's ever played an RPG, from Zelda to Final Fantasy, will be familiar with the classic item shop, that handy location where you can stock up on everything to help you out in your epic quest. It's therefore a bit of surprise to find a game where that item shop is the star of the show, but amazingly enough, this charming little game manages to entertain in quite a major way. It mixes classic RPG elements with business management in a clever and inventive way and which is certainly worthy of closer inspection. You play the part of the item shop girl, who finds herself running a little store after her dad bailed on a loan, and it's your job to turn things around and start making a profit. You're in charge of everything, from buying in new stock to keep the adventurers happy, to designing the interior. You can choose to get your stock the old-fashioned way, by exploring dungeons with other heroes, or you can just focus on the business side of things, and it's this variety which is at the heart of the game's appeal. Recettear really is quite the unexpected delight. It's very twee and cutesy, but don't let that put you off as there's a lot of things to do here as well as a good amount of depth. Keeping track of all your shop's requirements, and those of your customers, is a fairly hectic affair, but it's rarely less than enjoyable thanks to the sweet graphics, lovely characters and sheer variety. You can play it as a pure business sim, or you can go out and get your hands dirty slaying monsters, but however you play, you're sure for a great time!
