Let there be god
Looking at screenshots for Reprisal Universe should remind many people the classic god simulator, Populous, which pretty much kicked off the whole genre way back in the glory days of gaming. And indeed, when you actually pick up this new title, the gameplay is very similar, but while this might cause many to go and out and get it for the sake of nostalgia, there's one major issue that prevents this from being a must play: it's way too basic. The background to the game tells the tale of a forgotten god whose power has waned and who has been superseded by more powerful ones. However, he longs for a return to his previous position and now travels across the world in search of followers to restore his name. You are this god and you get to explore a vast universe, creating miracles, raising and lowering the land and doing anything that will bring the people into your fold so you can reclaim your rightful place amongst the pantheon of gods. Reprisal Universe certainly grabs the eye with its simple but very distinctive visual style, which both harkens back to old-school days but also offers a nice modern slickness that is very appealing, with its vibrant use of colors and stylized environmental design. However, when you start digging into the gameplay, you'll find little more than a very basic god sim which doesn't add anything new to the formula laid down so long ago by Populous. Thus this is unlikely to hold much appeal for dedicated strategy fans but if you consider yourself a more casual player, then this makes for a relaxing bit of entertainment.
