Old-school meets new-school
Taking its inspiration from the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Retro City Rampage is a neat old/new-school take on the open world gangster game and which provides plenty of guilty pleasure. The player is thrown in the role of a wannabe gangster from the eighties (he even sports a cool mullet) and whose goal seems to be to cause as much chaos as possible. There is a storyline which sees you completing a series of missions involving such criminal activities as conducting heists and extorting money but there are more bizarre elements such as meeting up with Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies. Indeed, one of the most enjoyable parts of the game is spotting all the pop culture references, of which there are many. There are also plenty of side quests and activities to get caught up in, such as boosting cars, driving tanks or using a bazooka to blast yourself into the air. Ranged and close combat are both available, with a wide range of guns to try out, but fisticuffs also proves immensely satisfying, while you there are around forty cars to try jump into too. For a delicious slice of modern gaming but with a distinct old-school vibe, this makes for top notch stuff. There are clear similarities with the GTA series but again, it's the sly humor and knowing air that make this game so much fun. There's a lot to do and the game should keep you busy for a while, as it simply a lot of fun exploring and seeing what kind of trouble you can get into. The retro visuals really evoke the period which inspired the game so overall, this makes for a good time.
