Get busy blasting!
Joining the ranks of classic sci-fi shooters like R-Type and Gradius comes this enjoyable entry into a well worn genre. It actually combines a decent storyline (which is very unusual for a shooter) with some solid blasting and tactical elements into a great all round game which is well worth picking up. The plot finds you waking up from neuro surgery with parts of your memory missing and which have been replaced by a crazed computer who will guide you through what is to follow. You have to navigate the super highway known as the Rings, where you'll face all sorts of deadly challenges and if you can emerge victorious, you'll discover the truth behind your destiny. The story is told through a lot of text but it's actually worth sticking with it, as it's pretty entertaining, with a surprising amount of depth and humor that helps make the game stand out. In gameplay terms, this is a top down shooter which involves many of the genre's familiar elements but which also brings in huge amounts of customizable ships, and heaps of special powers which are a lot of fun to play around with. Ring Runner really is quite the unexpected delight. It manages to take a well worn genre and infuse it with lots of imagination and inventiveness. The visuals are simple enough, but are quite stylish in their own way, with some nice effects and design work to enjoy. The story is highly entertaining, with some memorable characters and twists and turns, while the gameplay is as exciting and varied as you could hope for. Recommended!
