Sneaky does it
Like a turn-based version of Stealth Inc, this is a clever and enjoyable puzzle/action game which is only marred by its slightly short running time. It is cheap enough however that this doesn't make a huge difference and if you're after a bit of indie stealth fun, this is a solid bet. You find yourself in control of a vengeful heroine, who wants to make five corrupt company bosses pay for their crimes. Fortunately, you're pretty mean with a sword and have the kind of sneaking skills that made Metal Gear's Solid Snake a legend. You'll make your way through fifteen challenging missions, taking out the bad guys and their guards, or just sneaking your way through a complex series of heavily protected levels in order to get to the top dogs. The key here is that the game is turn-based, so you need to plan your moves in advance, watching for movement patterns and seizing opportunities for bold moves where you can. You've got a few handy gadgets to help out, including your blade, razor wire and even a holographic replicator to confuse your enemies with. Ronin really is quite a cracking little game. It's simply done but with every element executed with precision and style. The turn-based nature makes things both tense and exciting, and face-offs against multiple enemies are supremely enjoyable and challenging stuff. The story isn't up to much, but this is a small issue, while the visuals are stylish and slick, with some very atmospheric levels to explore. Throw in some tight controls and you're left with a top notch game.
