Science rocks!

If you fancy a break from the usual style of RPGs like Zelda and Phantasy Star but crave that uniquely Japanese outlook on things, then Science Girls! will be right up your alley. It blends elements of the aforementioned games with visual novel aspects to create an unusual but strangely compelling experience (especially if you're into Japanese schoolgirls). The game takes place in a high school which is suddenly attacked by strange monsters and it falls to six members of the science club to step in and save the day. Controlling up to six girls, you'll explore a series of environments while seeking out or avoiding the monsters and engaging in scripted visual novel-style sections when entering specific areas. Combat is turn-based with a number of options available like other games from the period like the old-school D&D titles. You've got the option to level up your characters which gives them access to new skills and special actions but you can only have three girls on the front line at any time so you'll need to swap them around regularly to help them get stronger. In many ways this is a standard Japanese top-down RPG so if you do enjoy those sorts of things, then there's much to enjoy here. The addition of the visual novel aspect gives it something a little different from other similar games, making it stand out a little more. The story is typically bonkers but actually proves quite compelling while the visuals are quite nice, with some cool character design and environments to enjoy. All in all, something for lovers of the quirky.
