Find the cure, save the world
Hailing from the team behind Resonance, Primordia and Technobabylon, this is another point-and-click adventure that is well worth checking out. It's perhaps not as good as some of the developer's other work, mainly due to some slightly off-kilter puzzles which spoil things a touch but it still provides an engaging and satisfying experience. The game takes place in that most beloved of settings, a post-apocalyptic nightmare Earth where the bombs have dropped and civilization now scavenges for survival. Disease, hunger, and death loom over all while the Aristocrats rule from above, controlling all resources and living it up while others flounder in the darkness. You play Amy, a young woman who works for the government and who is trying to get into the vaccine lottery, with the main story revolving around her efforts to discover a cure for the disease which is ravaging humanity. This translates into a traditional point-and-click adventure game, as you explore the rundown remains of civilization, seeking out clues which will bring you one step closer to salvation. Perhaps Shardlight's most obviously appealing feature is its graphics which are superb, with a beautiful pixel style that harks back to games like Monkey Island and Beneath a Steel Sky. There's so much detail in the lush environments that exploring them with your eyes is a major pleasure. Most of the adventuring here is pretty decent too, with the usual intuitive controls, intriguing storyline and well-written characters. The puzzles are mostly good but there are a few illogical ones which spoil things a touch. Apart from this though, Shardlight is a cracking romp.
