Here's another in the long running series of Sherlock Holmes adventures, and which this time taps into the deliciously dark possibilities offered by a matchup between the world's greatest detective and the most notorious killer of the 19th Century. It offers some wonderfully dark and gruesome sleuthing in a well-realized world, making it a fine addition to any amateur detective's collection. Following the discovery of a slain lady of the night in Whitechapel, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion, Watson, get on the case, hoping to track down the killer before too many other women fall prey to his deadly machinations. It's not long before the bodies start piling up, so Holmes had better find the clues and solve the mystery lest London fall into the nightmare grip of the Ripper. The game itself is a third/first-person adventure, where you explore the various crime scenes and other locations while searching for clues and interrogating witnesses and suspects while there are numerous deductive reasoning puzzles to be solved along the way. This really is quite a cracking little adventure. It gets off to a great start, with some wonderfully atmospheric visuals that really nail the period and help to suck you into the story. The case itself is a grim one but which is never less than fascinating and which does an excellent job of playing off the opportunities presented by the subject matter. The puzzles and investigatory work are compelling and satisfying to solve and although there are problems with the pacing and other minor issues, for the most part this is a fine adventure.
