If Capcom and Konami had a baby...

Shovel Knight is a superb love letter to classic adventures like Mega Man, Zelda, Mario and Castlevania and if you have any interest in retro games, then this modern take is a must play. The game mixes lovely old-school visuals with modern sensibilities and gameplay mechanics to great effect and should be added to any platform fan's collection. You take control of Shovel Knight, a bold hero who has to defeat an evil enchantress and get his beloved back. However, between him and glory stand a number of villainous knights, so he'll have to make his way through a number of side-scrolling levels, defeating enemies, jumping off platforms and all sorts of other activities. Helping you out is the Shovel Blade, a unique weapon that has a number of uses and which will prove invaluable in your quest. The whole thing is told with a lightness of touch and a great sense of humor, with crazy bosses and plenty of memorable characters to meet along the way. Shovel Knight really is a wonderful little game. It nails that old-school look perfectly, with some lovely environments to explore and some great character design work to enjoy. The gameplay is simple enough but never less than fun, and requires a good mix of skills to succeed. It's challenging, but not frustratingly so and should keep even hardened genre fans going for some time. The bosses are inventive, the story strangely compelling, and the controls tight and responsive, just as you need them to be. Anyone with fond memories of the NES should definitely check this out.
