Fall out, men!
Playing out like a mix of Cannon Fodder, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon if they'd been directed by Terry Gilliam, Signal Ops is a bonkers but hugely enjoyable little treat. It's got a wonderfully original setting and some deep and enthralling gameplay which work together extremely well and make this well worth seeking out. You find yourself in the shoes of an officer in a shadowy organization dedicated to espionage in a dystopian future. You remotely lead your squad of agents as they embark on a series of dangerous missions, planting evidence, stealing secrets and assassinating top ranking officials, all for the glory of the Dark Father. The game finds you controlling each member of your squad via a first person view but your troops aren't the usual highly trained soldiers and are instead a bit on the rubbish side and are armed with poor equipment. There's elements of stealth and combat to consider here, so arming your troops is vital, while missions are largely open and allow you to play things how you want to. For the most part, Signal Ops is a proper little treat. The setting is unique and well realized, with a good sense of humor and some very striking visuals that help the game stand out. The graphics aren't super flashy though and it's more the sense of design and quirkiness that give such a great effect. Things are a bit confusing to start with, in terms of both gameplay and controls but once you get the hang of it all, it becomes a lot more enjoyable. It's definitely not a game for everyone, but if you like unusual experiences, there's much to enjoy here.
