Shadow of the beast

A mix of classic old-school scrolling action games like Castlevania, Shadow of the Beast, Gods, and Stormlord, Slain! is an undeniably gorgeous experience but unfortunately looks aren't everything. It's a very promising title but at the moment it feels unfinished and rushed so if you are interested, it might be worth waiting a while to see if it becomes more polished. There's not much of a storyline here but what there is explains that you are Bathoryn, a hero running wild in a Gothic land whose job it is is to save six towers which have been taken over by bloodthirsty tyrants. What this means for the gameplay is that you have here a scrolling platform/action game where you must roam around the various levels, whacking beasts with your various weapons while solving the occasional puzzle and generally leaping around like a loon. There are lots of creepy monsters to kill, including some particularly nasty bosses while there are also three elemental weapons which must be mastered in order to succeed. First things first, Slain! looks gorgeous. The visuals make superb use of color and special effects to create a very striking atmosphere while the pixel-style environments and enemies are imaginative and full of detail. The essential gameplay is fun if a tad simplistic but it's in the details where the game really falls down. The presentation just isn't finished, while the controls are loose and awkward and there's a definite lack of sound effects. It's also very laggy and prone to crashes so until these issues get sorted, it's tough to recommend this.
