The earlier Sniper Elite games are satisfying and enjoyable variations on the shooter genre which provide some more tactical elements over things like the Call of Duty franchise and which are known for their gratuitous X-ray deathcam kill shots, which bring a new guilty pleasure to proceedings. This third main entry is another solid effort if you don't fancy sci-fi or modern shooting action, and prefer to keep things historical. You play as returning series hero, Karl Fairburne, a sniper who is sent into enemy territory in North Africa during World War II to target a secret weapons programme which could spell disaster for the Allies if left unchecked. The gameplay is similar to the earlier entries, this being a shooter which encourages stealth over direct action, but which will require you to get up close and personal with your enemy while also sniping them from afar. The biggest difference here is the move away from tight, linear levels to a more open approach which gives you much more freedom in how you tackle a level, and which certainly proves to make things more interesting. There's the usual mix of weapons and gadgets to make use of, while the deathcam system is now even more impressive and which ups the guilty pleasure count a little more. As far as sniping games go, this is surely the go-to offering on the shelves. It delivers on just about every count, with some some nice visuals to represent the bright environments of North Africa and some challenging missions to get your teeth into and which combine to make this a fun romp.
