Boom! Headshot!

The original Sniper Elite was a pretty neat variation on the classic military shooter formula, as seen in Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, providing as it did heaps of sniping action. This sequel adds enough new features to warrant a look even if you have played the first game and makes for a similarly entertaining time. You're in control of the same sniper from the original who finds himself inserted undercover into Germany in the dying days of World War II and charged with hunting down German rocket scientists. As this is a sniping game first and foremost, running headlong into your missions is going to get you killed quickly, so you need to use stealth and tactics to scope out the terrain and then move around sneakily in order to take out the bad guys with the minimum of fuss. Like the Hitman games, you can move bodies around to ensure they're not found or plant explosives on them as a booby trap to catch the unwary, but most of the time you're taking out the enemy from afar, which is a very satisfying experience. As with many shooters, Sniper Elite's biggest issue is its general linearity, which doesn't allow for too much freedom in how you approach missions. This isn't a huge problem however as there's still a fair few ways to tackle a particular task, meaning it doesn't get too frustrating. The sniping is generally well done, being satisfying and enjoyable, requiring a decent amount of skill to get in those head shots, while the infamous kill cam also makes an appearance here to add to the visceral thrills. Throw in some decent visuals and you have a decent and unusual shooter.
