Speed demon

Unlike many franchises (Worms anyone?), Sonic never struggled to make the leap into 3D, with his first such outing, Sonic Adventure, adding much to the essential concept that made Sonic so different. It wasn't flawless though, suffering from control issues, a problem this more recent offering also exhibits. This one is still a fine game however, and does the Sonic name proud, making it one for fans and newcomers alike. The plots for the franchise are getting madder, with this one involving the notorious Dr. Eggman, robot armies, magic conchesm, and more. The gameplay blends three different styles together, these being open-world 3D levels, side-scrolling 2.5D platforming, and on-rails into-the-screen type action. You've got all the familiar elements in each style, like collecting rings, launch pads and so on, while Sonic has a few nifty moves to help him take out the bad guys. You've got a few modes to play as well, including Time Trials, co-op and a handful of other bits and bobs. Lost World is a fair way from being perfect but there's no denying there's a lot of fun to be had. However, you do have to put up with a few frustrations, like unfair mechanics, some wobbly level design and occasionally dodgy controls but if you can get past this, the sheer fun of the Sonic concept shines through. It's certainly a nice looking game, with some impressive environments to appreciate, and it gets the all important sense of speed right. It's a shame about the problems but if you're willing to ignore them, this stands as a great outing for the old spiky hedgehog.
