Pirates! And zombies!
A sort of mix of space games like Star Control
, Ring Runner
and Operation Inner Space, this is a fun little experience that only proves to lack variety and depth when played for substantial periods of time. It has a lot of charm and inventiveness though, so if you are looking for a good time, you'll find it here. Plus it has zombies. And pirates. In space. At its heart, SPAZ is a top down sci-fi combat game, which sees you roaming around the universe, looking for ways to upgrade your ever expanding fleet of ships while blowing up the various stages of the zombie virus which is rapidly spreading. The universe is persistent and randomly generated with multiple story elements, enemies, missions and items to discover, each of which are recreated anew each time you start a new game. There are RPG-style elements in the way that you can experiment with technology and level up while there's plenty of tactical depth thanks to the range of enemies and factions that you'll face. SPAZ is certainly a fun game and grabs you right from the get go. This is helped by the undeniably pretty visuals which are full of colour and character, with lots of nice explosions and effects. Dig a little deeper though and you'll find some interesting gameplay which is highly enjoyable, thanks to the range of customization and other elements. Missions are challenging too, but the real problem comes when you play for too long, as you find there isn't as much depth as you thought, with a lack of variation, so this is perhaps a game best played in small doses.
