Forge your destiny
Slightly similar to the likes of story-driven action RPGs such as Geneforge
, Stories is a cracking adventure that mixes striking visuals with a bold narrative and some entertaining combat to great effect. It's perhaps not overly original in terms of its core gameplay but it makes up for this with its sheer personality and is thus well worth adding to your collection. The game takes place in a wonderfully-realized fairytale universe full of floating islands, magic, and airships. You take on the role of Reynaldo, a former pirate who finds himself caught up in the evil Emperor's plot to take over the land and which will see you facing off against hordes of the ruler's armies. The core gameplay here is similar to other isometric action RPGs, involving a lot of exploration and hacking and slashing against the numerous bad guys you'll come across. What's really interesting here though is the way that the narrative revolves around the choices you make and which can see things branching off in unexpected ways. Stories really is a corking little romp. It scores a huge amount of points for its stunning visuals which are bold, striking, and imaginative, and which make a lovely change from the usual dark fantasy seen in similar games. The narrative is wonderfully engaging too, with lots of highly creative scenarios to discover and which are enhanced by the choice-driven nature of the gameplay. The core combat is implemented well, being satisfying and enjoyable, making this a proper little gem that deserves to be played.
