A bold experience
A superb mix of exploration, survival and rogue-like, Sunless Sea is a truly enthralling experience that should be played by anyone who simply enjoys great games. It is set in a fascinating alternate history version of Victorian London, and which it shares with Fallen London, and finds the player choosing from a variety of characters (whose backstory can be filled in by the player) and a small steam-powered ship and then embarking on an epic adventure. It's up to you to choose your character's ambition, which determines your overall goal, and which affects the story and your subsequent encounters. Whatever your choice, your initial tasks are to survive and to explore, and you have to worry about things like your ship's condition, your crew's morale and the possibility of being attacked by monsters. When the inevitable combat does occur, it takes place in turn-based fashion, with some interesting options alongside the usual expected features. Sunless Sea really is quite the treat for gamers on the look out for something distinctive. It's sheer open-endedness is a big draw and the variety of options for characters and ambitions gives it a lot of replay value. The world itself is superbly well crafted and makes for an endlessly exciting place to explore, with the lovely visuals giving it a real sense of place and personality. There's a lot of things to do in the game, so you should be kept busy for some time, with the combat and exploration being challenging, tactical and thrilling equal measure. Overall, Sunless Sea is a cracking adventure that deserves to be played.
