Puzzling to the beat
With its mix of Tetris-style twitch gameplay and minimalist visuals, Super Hexagon makes for an entertaining slice of puzzle action. Like all such games, it's simple to pick up and play, but proves to be pretty challenging and highly compelling, making it a good bet for any fan of fast-paced puzzle games. The player controls a small triangle that is locked in a fixed position in the center of the screen. The only interaction is to rotate the triangle in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise fashion within a fixed radius in order to avoid the oncoming shapes and walls, which approach in time to the music. These obstacles can rotate as well for extra challenge, and the space within which you can move is often very limited, adding to the difficulty. There are points where speed is increased or controls suddenly reversed, and which really require you to stay on the ball. You only get one life, so fail and it's game over, while there are several difficulty levels to try your hand at, with completion of a level requiring 60 seconds of survival in order to progress to the next, but with play continuing until a collision occurs. Super Hexagon certainly isn't complex and feels like a mix of Tempest and Tetris, but it provides some intense action which is perfect for a quick blast when you have a few minutes to fill. It is also maddeningly addictive, so be careful those few minutes don't turn into hours. The simple visuals and appealing music help to suck you in, and the game has a genuinely hypnotic feel that is hard to fight. A great little experience.
