Exploration at its finest

Master of Orion 2 stands as possibly one of the finest science fiction 4x games out there and although this doesn't quite live up to these standards, it's still a very tempting option for genre fans looking for their next fix. This Complete Collection is a pretty good investment too, as you get the base game plus three full expansion packs and a few other bits and bobs. The core idea of the game will be familiar to anyone who has played such a title before, with the player choosing from one of four races, each with their own unique characteristics, and then venturing out into the galaxy to claim it as their own. There's the usual mix of exploration, combat, research, colonization and so on, with heaps of customization options. The expansion packs bring in new races, expand on the lore, and introduce new technologies and weapons while also adding some new gameplay mechanics and tweaks to the interface. For the most part, Sword of the Stars is a highly compelling experience. It's not perfect by any means, with a few irritations in things like the interface and there's a general lack of purpose to the whole affair, but if you just like exploring space, then this is a great way to do it. There's a real sense of depth and meatiness to the game, which means you're likely to throw a lot of hours into playing it, and it's very easy to get sucked in. The visuals are simple but generally effective and the expansion packs bring in some very welcome new features so if you're looking for a new 4x, this is a solid bet.
