Get exploring!

Taking its inspiration from classics as diverse as Rogue and Laser Squad, Tales of Maj'Eyal is a cracking little rogue-like/RPG that is cheap, cheerful and a whole lot of fun. Although much of the game is familiar stuff, it's all put together with such skill and charm that it transcends any general lack of originality and is thus well worth adding to your shopping list. It takes place in the well realized land of Eyal and sees you taking on the role of a bold adventurer who must venture forth into this danger-filled world, exploring dungeons, slaying beasts and developing a range of characters as you see fit. There are a number of unique races and classes for you to choose, and which gives the game some replay value as they all play very differently. The dungeons are also randomly generated which helps to keep you on your toes, while the main focus of the gameplay is on the tactical, turn-based battles. Tales of Maj'Eyal really is a great little indie game that displays a lot of depth and which transcends its humble origins. There's a huge amount of flexibility in character development and which gives the game a great sense of freedom. It's an easy game to get into as well, thanks to its simple but intuitive interface while the controls are equally as accessible. The visuals are quite stylish in a simple sort of way and pack a lot of personality. There's never any real grinding to be done, which is great and instead you can focus on the exploration and battling, which are rewarding and enjoyable. All in all, a lovely little game.
