Neo-noir done cool
The name of Tex Murphy is something of a minor gaming legend, with the tough detective having starred in a number of hard-edged, sci-fi tinged adventures, starting with Mean Streets and continuing with the likes of Under a Killing Moon. Tesla Effect is set some years after Tex's last case, chronicled in Overseer and finds the once moral detective in a bit of a downer. The game starts as Tex is attacked and soon seems him suffering from amnesia and on a quest to find out what's going on. His investigations soon take a turn for the complex and a sinister plot involving bizarre experiments soon unfolds. In gameplay terms, this one is similar to previous entries and plays out as a first-person point-and-click thriller, where you explore some impressive environments, interact with numerous characters and solve puzzles. There are plenty of slick live-action video clips here, starring a hefty line-up of C-list actors, while there are also several different endings to discover, and which alter according to your actions and decisions. If you've played any of the earlier games in the series, then this one is just about a must-play. It retains much of the previous titles' appeal, with its hard-edged setting, tough but likable lead character and mix of exploration and puzzle solving. Newcomers are likely to be baffled by the storyline so would be advised to go back to the beginning but if you want to find out what Tex has been up to, this is a no brainer. visuals, script and puzzles are all impressive so for a cracking bit of noir style entertainment, check this one out. Take a look too at Blade Runner for a real classic.
