Delightful and charming
Teslagrad is a delightful little platform/puzzle adventure that harks back to the glory days of Mario and the like. It's quite original stuff and is inspired by the works of Nikola Tesla which gives it a unique and charming feel. The background for the game sees the player taking on the role of a young boy who finds himself in a mysterious tower that is filled with strange machinery (that's the bit where Tesla comes in). You get to freely explore the tower but in order to progress you need to use a variety of special abilities in order to solve the many puzzles which bar your progress. The puzzles are all based around the idea of magnetic fields, with objects of certain colors attracting or repelling others of the same or opposite color. You're armed with a pair of gloves which can change the polarity of objects but can also earn upgrades like the cannon which changes polarity over distances or a handy teleporter. Thrown on top of the puzzles, you also have plenty of old-school platforming fun which requires pixel perfect jumping, while there are also the occasional boss battles to take on. Teslagrad really grabs you from the get-go. It communicates entirely without words, so there's a lot put on the player in order to progress but this adds greatly to the sense of achievement as you figure things out for yourself. The visuals add greatly to the appeal, with charming environments that are just lovely to explore, but it's the puzzles and platforming mix which is the real draw. Both are superbly well done and combine to make this a real treat.
