Bring it on
The Age of Decadence is a superb entry into the complex, text-driven narrative RPG genre that is typified by the likes of Divinity
, Wasteland 2
and Pillars of Eternity
. It's got all the meaningful decision making, gripping storylines and depth that fans of such games require, so if you are a fan of this sort of thing, this needs to go on your shopping list. The world you will explore is a low fantasy, post apocalyptic take on the fall of the Roman Empire which features a myriad of complex, intertwining plots and a vast cast of genuinely well written characters that leap of the screen at you. You've got all the usual features of such games, like a deep character generation options, skill trees, a huge variety of weapons and items, quests, decision making and of course combat. However, the focus here is not on mindlessly slaying monsters, but more on making meaningful choices that have genuine consequences that will come back to haunt you if not made wisely. There are multiple ways to handle any situation and the real joy of the game is its sense of open-endedness and the fact that you can play any way you want. The isometric visuals are splendidly well done, with some really atmospheric and original design work to enjoy, while the game's writing pleases with its depth and maturity. There is a lot of text to wade through, but it's so well written that it doesn't really matter. The combat is genuinely interesting too, and requires much more than just mindlessly clicking the fire button, so overall, if you want a really challenging RPG to sink your teeth into, this is for you.
