Take up arms
The Bluecoats is a newer version of the fondly remembered strategy game North & South and unlike many remakes or reboots, this one does a pretty fine job of bringing the game up to date. Therefore, whether you're a fan of the original or a newcomer, this makes for an entertaining little romp. The game is loosely based on a Belgian comic strip, so it's a not entirely serious look at the American Civil War but which still packs in some depth alongside the entertainment. You can choose to play as either side in the conflict, the Union or the Confederacy, and you'll basically be moving your troops around a map of the US in order to seize key strategic locations, with control of railway lines and forts allowing you to move valuable resources around in order to support your war effort. When you attack an area controlled by enemy soldiers, turn-based combat ensues, where you'll control infantry, artillery and cavalry and where your goal is to crush the other guys into the dirt. In a nice nod to the original, there are several mini-games also included and which help to make this feel like a proper homage. The Bluecoats might not be the most complex strategy game out there, but if you're after some fun with your tactics, then this is a great choice. It's easy to pick up but does have enough depth to keep you going for a while. The humor is a breath of fresh air, while the colorful visuals are simply brimming with charm and personality. Throw in some intuitive controls and you have a fine little experience.
