Nice planet! We'll take it!
It might be short but The Deadly Tower of Monsters sure is sweet. It's a gloriously silly mix of shooters and RPGs like Duke Nukem, Bombshell, and Diablo II, that plays like a video game version of Mars Attacks with its wonderfully over the top action. There are a few issues with the game but these are pretty minor and for the most part this is a rollicking good experience. TDTOM is very much a spoof game and pitches itself as a low budget movie shot in the 1970s with director's commentary and other such clever references. The plot is straight up sci-fi B-movie heaven with aliens, titanic monsters, evil scientists, ape-creatures, bold heroes, and robot companions, but despite this silliness and excess, the story is surprisingly well told and engaging. The gameplay is an action-packed romp as you explore strange worlds while battling vicious aliens and generally saving the universe, making use of some suitably inventive weaponry and special powers as you go. There's not much on the market that's quite like this in terms of presentation and it's here that the game scores particularly highly. It really sucks you in right from the start with its knowing cinematic references and spoof ideas and it's hard not to play while having a big smile on your face. The gameplay itself is livened up by the ridiculous weaponry, monsters and other elements as it pretty entertaining from start to finish, with a wonderful blend of comedy and action. It's not the longest game in the world and there's not much replay value but apart from this, this is a fine romp.
