The Game of Life

Puzzle 1998 Windows Infogrames Board games

Perfect for a wet Sunday afternoon

Like Monopoly and Scrabble, this is a pretty solid adaptation of a classic board game that fills a void if you are looking for a computerized version of such a thing. The Game of Life might not be quite so well known as things like Clue but it provides some entertaining party-style fun that is just what you need on a wet Sunday afternoon. This one follows its real world counterpart pretty closely and sees up to six players competing against one another in a classic race around the board. You get to spin the wheel, make your move and then find a job, get married, play the stock market or any one of life's other myriad surprises, with the overall goal of getting richer than your friends. There are two versions of the game here, the classic one which follows the original almost exactly, and the enhanced one which takes more advantage of the fact that you're playing on a computer, with some special extra rules and features. Whichever one you play, if you're in the right mood, you're going to have a good time. The gameplay is pretty timeless, and remains as fun as it did when it was first introduced, as long as you have other people to play with. It's a bit of a lonely and slightly tedious experience if you play against the computer though, as you lose any sense of real competition so you're best advised to dig out some friends first. The visuals are quite slick and actually give you a reason to play on the computer rather than on the board, and overall, this is a well done adaptation that is worth adding to your collection.
