The game is afoot!
Like other Frogwares games such as The Awakened
, this is a pretty nifty slice of Sherlock Holmes adventuring that offers much to fans of puzzlers like Myst and the great detective himself. It offers a worthy and entertaining story with some clever and inventive puzzles that would baffle old Holmes himself, making it a fine addition to any armchair detective's collection. The story finds Holmes caught up in a mysterious case where he is accused of being complicit in the faking of a necklace which he himself returned after it was stolen. Worse still, when he arrives at a meeting with a Bishop, the poor man is dead, mutilated in a most horrific way, so now Holmes must venture deep into the heart of old London town to discover the truth behind the mysteries while uncovering dark secrets about himself. Gameplay is similar to the other Frogwares games, being a third- and first-person adventure in point-and-click style. You'll get to roam around London, investigating crime scenes, interrogating witnesses and gathering clues, and hopefully making clever deductions that lead you to a satisfactory conclusion. This really is another cracking entry in the Holmes series. It starts out very strongly, with a great set-up that hooks you in and manages to keep the pace up for most of the running time, although the ending is a tad strange and a slight letdown. The puzzles are tough but fair in the main, in keeping with the great man himself, while the visuals are up to the usual standard and do a good job of bringing London to life. All in all, a fine adventure.
