Enter the world of the Witcher
This spinoff from the classic Witcher series of epic fantasy RPGs
is actually a computerized interpretation of the boardgame created by the original designers. It's not quite as good as its inspiration though and falls slightly short of other adaptations like Space Hulk
. The game itself is similar in scope to the RPGs, and sees players exploring a vast, dark land, picking up quests as a Witcher and attempting to outdo your rivals. Quest here include the likes of hunting beasts, solving mysteries and becoming involved in political intrigues, but whatever you do, your choices will come back to haunt you. There's a handful of characters from the original games to choose from, including Geralt himself, Triss the sorceress and Dandelion the roguish bard, each with their own unique skills. There are several modes to play in, including against the computer or against friends, either local or online, while most of the mechanics are simple to pick up and there are lots of monsters and other features taken from the universe. Most of the game works quite while, although there are a few mechanics which take a bit of trial and error to figure out, while the whole thing certainly feels very much like it's set in the Witcher universe. The visuals are simple but effective and the gameplay is varied and quite challenging. A big issue though is the lack of real player interaction and it does seem possible never to really come into contact with the others, which makes it feel a bit lonely at times. Apart from this though, this makes for an entertaining journey into the world of the Witcher.
