War is hell
This War of Mine is an intriguing and highly original take on the survival genre, and scores a lot of points for its visual style, narrative skill and challenging gameplay. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you're prepared for something a little different, you'll find this very rewarding. The game throws you into a terrible war but instead of being a soldier, you're in control of an ordinary bunch of citizens who are just trying to survive its horrors in one piece. You'll face a variety of fairly realistic situations, from avoiding snipers' bullets to scavenging for resources and trading with other survivors, all the while trying keep your group together. The game uses a realistic day and night cycle, with daytime bringing the threat of snipers, but with night also offering its own terrors as you venture out to gather what you need. Each time you play, you're given a new group of survivors to play with, and your goal is simply to get them through the war alive, but in another clever twist, you never really know how long it's going to last. This provides a solid backdrop for what is a gripping, intense and very unusual look at the darker side of war. For the most post, this is an enthralling experience. The stories that unfold as you play are emotional and harrowing, and the decisions you must make will challenge you greatly. Much of what transpires here sounds like it might not be that fun, given the subject matter but it's testament to the designers' skills that this is both though-provoking and enjoyable. Definitely one to play if you're after a memorable experience.
