Quirk it up

The original Torchlight was a corking piece of action RPG shenanigans, taking the best parts of Diablo and Diablo II, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, and Fate, and combining them all into a superb experience. This sequel builds on the foundations of its predecessor and once again results in a first-class game. Once again, you get to explore the dark and quirky world of Torchlight, a mining town that was built to harvest the valuable ore that is Ember, a mysterious substance that can corrupt or enchant anything it touches. The gameplay is similar to previously, and to other games in the genre, in that you'll venture around a vast land of caverns, snowy wastes, deserts, and plains, while hacking at monsters, grabbing loot, and uncovering secrets. You've got multiplayer, a randomized world, heaps of customization options, random events, weather, day/night cycles, and even pets to add to your characters and who can help out in those really dangerous moments. In many ways, this doesn't add a whole lot that's new to the genre but it does everything so well that this can easily be forgiven. It scores a lot of points for its quirky setting and characters which give the game a lot of personality while the sheer range of customization options is also impressive. The gameplay is slick, fast, furious, and never less than entertaining, with a lot of depth to back up the action. The graphics are fairly standard ARPG stuff but there's still a lot of charm and visual interest thanks to the slick effects and detailed backgrounds. All in all, a fine addition to any ARPG collection.
