Haunting and original
If the hypnotic charms of puzzle adventures like Myst and Riven are your bag, then this surreal and abstract experience could be your new best friend. It's not going to be for everyone, thanks to its sheer unusualness and its complex themes, but if you're prepared to give it a whirl, you should find it immensely rewarding. The story here finds you thrust into a dark fantasy world that is packed with danger and intrigue. You are the Moonchild and it is your goal to climb the mysterious tower in order to find your true purpose. You'll face challenging puzzles and dangerous monsters along the way, while also learning more about yourself. The story and setting are highly intriguing, and there is a real sense of depth to the narrative, with a lot of thought-provoking images and themes on display here. There's a genuine sense of progression and involvement with the main character and the tower itself, as you'll see both of them age and develop as you move through the game. Fortunately, in other respects the game is equally appealing. The visuals are undeniably stylish, with some slick environmental and character designs, although they might not be to everyone's taste. The gameplay too is mostly enthralling, with exploration being genuinely exciting and with the puzzles and combat being well implemented and challenging. Toren might be a little too out there for mainstream gamers but to ignore it would be a mistake as there is real sense of originality to the game, so if you do like things that are a little different, then check this out.
