If you can imagine a crazy mix of Binding of Isaac, FTL and Doom 2, then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Tower of Guns. It's not exactly the most polished of games, and looks a little rough and ready, but it stands as a fun tribute to the glory days of Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D. This isn't a game with a complex narrative and it certainly isn't deep or complicated in gameplay terms, but its full-on shooting action is perfect in short doses. You're basically just running around blasting merry hell out of everything, exploring the semi-random levels which also contain randomised secrets, objects and pick-ups. There's the usual array of cool weapons to find and some interesting environments to run around, while the enemies are also pretty original. The main focus here is on the sheer chaotic speed of the action, and in this respect, Tower of Guns succeeds. The pace is relentless, fast and furious right from the outside, with thrills that never let up and don't allow you to think about much other than pulling that trigger finger. The game is best played in short bursts of about twenty minutes as if you sit down for any longer, you're likely to realise that there's not much to it but while you are playing, you're guaranteed to have a good time. The visuals are pretty decent but far from perfect and it's clear this is the work of just a couple of guys who did pretty much everything. It's testament to their skills however, that the end result is as entertaining as it is, so for some cheap and cheerful action, this is a good bet.
