Towerfall: Ascension is a wonderful addition to the growing number of couch co-op games which aim to bring back the glory days of sitting around a single monitor with your friends while going head-to-head on something like Gauntlet. It's a delightfully clever and simple little game which features some stylish visuals and compelling gameplay, so if you've got a couple of buddies looking to kick it old-school, then add this to your collection. The game is basically an archery combat game which plays out like a mad version of Bomberman, where you go up against your friends in a series of duels where you're simply trying to be the last one standing. However, it's rarely as simple as that, and there are loads of insane powerups and other such tricks, while there are loads of game modes to try your hand at, so although it sounds fairly basic, it's actually got a huge amount of depth. It is very easy to pick up, thanks to the intuitive controls, but it's going to take some time to master, although this isn't really a problem, as the game is just so much fun. There is a single-player campaign to play through, but to be honest this could be skipped as the real draw is the multiplayer and this is where you're likely to spend most of your time. The action comes at you fast and furious, and matches can get pretty raucous but which are never less than hugely entertaining. The variety of moves and abilities keeps things interesting, while the visuals are slick and stylish, with some cracking pixel-art design work to enjoy. Overall, if you're looking for a fun multiplayer experience, then you need this.
