Satisfying sword action sidescroller with…Vikings!
I have a weak spot in my heart for Vikings. I played The lost Vikings to death because of that (plus, it was really good!) and I tend to read a lot of norse mythology. Likewise, gaming with Vikings is better for me even when the games might not be as well executed. But that was not an issue with Volgarr the Viking, a really well done sidescroller, filled with enemies that just ask to be pierced by your sword. The level design with a lot of altitudes and quite a bit of platforming is really intense, fast paced and well crafted, but definitely the magic is in the action. The hero can swing his sword so satisfyingly, able to clean enemies left and right with just a gratous left to right and right to left swoop, while in mid air, while jumping or while falling. It's simple and yet so gratifying , so relaxing. I like it as much as Painkiller in terms of its power to channel negative energy, but I also play it as a timewaster. Nope, this isn't an intellectually challenging game, it is a game that you play in Zen/Berserk mode, causing as much mayhem as possible and enjoying the damage caused at every step. Plus, the game looks so very nice that it would be such a waste not to give it a go. A definite classic, at least on my hard drive!
