Waking Mars is a strangely fascinating experience which plays out a little like a cross between Metroid
and which provides plenty of enthralling gameplay. As you might expect from the title, it finds you in the role of the first Mars colonizer who finds himself in a spot of bother when he gets trapped by a cave-in while exploring the Red Planet. What follows is mesmerizing adventure through the caves of Mars which sees you using your jetpack to explore the vast underground world which lies beneath the surface. As you delve deeper, you'll find an array of bizarre alien lifeforms which operate together as one living, breathing ecosystem. The main goal is to survive this nightmare but as you progress you'll discover lost ruins and uncover secrets you never dreamed of. The whole thing is played in side scrolling 2D fashion, and the main point of the game is exploring for the sheer joy of it while trying to make sense of the complex ecosystem. Waking Mars is certainly original and although it might not be for everyone, if you are prepared for something unusual, you're likely to have a good time. The visuals are nicely stylish, for the most part, with some very evocative and dramatic environments, although the human artwork is not likely to be to everyone's taste, while the sound is well done and rather haunting. The focus on exploration over action or puzzling is a bold one but it works and there's a genuine sense of discovery and adventure to be experienced here, so if that sounds like something you'd enjoy, then check this out.
