What lurks beneath
A modern take on the 2D sidescrolling platformer, this is a gorgeous-looking game which also manages to combine horror with platforming but it unfortunately suffers from being woefully short and very unchallenging, making it an unfulfilling experience. The story finds a young girl investigating the disappearance of her father, a groundskeeper at a spooky mansion, after dreaming about a terrifying creature snatching him away. What follows is a Metroid/Castlevania-style experience where the young girl must explore a series of creepy underground environments as she searches for her father. There's a mixture of environmental puzzles to solve along with adventuring as you seek out the various secrets which lurk beneath the surface, while there are also other characters to meet and interact with. You have access to a cool amulet which gives you some special powers to help you out, such as the ability to fly or fit through tiny gaps. The whole is fairly linear but the general size of the world makes it feel like there's more freedom. In essence, this is a fairly decent little offering. It's certainly quite striking in terms of visuals, with some nice effects work and a suitably spooky atmosphere, while the audio complements this well. It's also cleverly designed and has an intriguing storyline but when you discover there's only a couple of hours gameplay here, you're almost certain to be disappointed. The lack of difficulty compounds this and results in a frustrating game because it could have been so much better.
