A nice bit of witchery
Witches might not be very well known, but it turns out to be a delightfully whacky strategy game which is perfect for lovers of chess, checkers and Mahjong. The idea of the game is simple enough but proves to be quite addictive, and it can be played in short bursts, making it perfect for when you just have a few minutes to spare. The goal is simple enough and sees players taking part in a sort of contest organised by the Witches' Guild where they have to move their party of witches across a board to a designated square, following a specific set of rules and competing against the computer. This is more difficult than it sounds though, thanks to the limitations placed on you and due to the fact that the computer cheats like the devil. You have to make sure you don't get stuck as if you do, you lose, while you can also capture your opponents' pieces to help make your life easier. As with all the best such games, Witches doesn't sound like much when described on paper, but in practice it turns out to be highly engaging. The rules are simple enough to learn and you'll have it all figured out in no time at all but also as with chess, it takes some time to master things to the point where there's no challenge. The visuals are obviously not exactly up to much, but they are clean and uncluttered and allow things to proceed easily enough. The witch icons have a decent amount of character though and help to give the game some extra appeal. If you're fed up with Minesweeper and looking for a new challenge, this might just be your new best friend.
