Minimalist first person graphics RPG title

For the time when this game was released fully developed titles built in the Golden Box engine were still to come. Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a great classic of the stickman in the cave era of first person RPGs. The staples of the genre are all there, a story involving wizards and their disciples, a kingdom in need of a rescuer and all the action you could think of based mostly in underground tunnels that will test your orientation skills and your RPG tactics, but also your imagination. Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord looks very poorly by modern day first person gaming standards, but for the time it was quite innovative. Released in 1981, the title innovates by creating the first staples of the genre, later to be developed by Golden Box titles. But for the time being imagine a combination of elements, some lifted from interactive novels, while others are novel to the kind of first person exploration that this game used. So, prepare for a lot of dungeon crawl with abysmal graphics for today but great for its time and at least take comfort that the engine uses the Dungeons and Dragons rules for battles. However, this won't be a game for everyone, but for the people that can really put their imaginations in the mix or do without much of the graphic luxuries of modern RPGs.
