Unfinished but intriguing
Looking very much like action RPGs such as Diablo II
and the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
, Wolcen is an intriguing little game but which is hard to recommend wholeheartedly at the moment. The main problem is that it is still in development, so many of the features it promises either aren't yet implemented or are present but not quite complete, making it feel like the half-done product it is. It follows in the footsteps of other RPGs like Avernum
, with its interesting storyline which follows the adventures of a former officer in the Human Republic Army, who is forced to flee when it is discovered he had developed magic powers. Out in the wilds, hunted by humans and animals alike, you're found by the Templars and now find yourself on an epic quest to discover the truth behind the shattered remnants of humanity. What follows is an open-world action RPG, with the usual range of magic, weapons, and gear to choose from and customize your character with. There are no class limits here so you're free to mix and match as you please while the combat is fast-paced and action-packed. Wolcen does look like it will be a solid addition to the genre when it's done. It's got some nice fantasy-style visuals with lots of slick special effects while the bad guys are well done and challenging. However, it falls down a bit with things like quests which don't currently do anything other than exist while descriptions are also unfinished, making a lot of things difficult to understand properly. So, if you want to support what might be a great game, get this now, but for most people, caution is probably best advised.
