Grim and gritty
Although similar in concept and style to other Telltale games like Back to the Future and The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us is perhaps their strongest title to date. It mixes their signature mature storytelling with atmospheric visuals to create a superb and immersive adventure. The game is based on a set of comics, but knowledge of the world isn't necessary as it eases newcomers in gently. The world itself is a grim and gritty one where characters from fairy tales, myths and fables have escaped into the real world. You get to play as Sheriff Bigby, who is in charge of protecting the people of Fabletown, but who finds himself caught up in a complex murder mystery that will see him delving into the dark and bloody underbelly of the city. What follows is a fantastic adventure which sees you exploring the city, meeting a whole cast of fascinating characters who hide secrets aplenty. The gameplay is similar to other Telltale games, with almost no puzzles and a focus on exploration, dialogue-based choice and the occasional quick time event. You're forced to make plenty of serious choices along the way as the story unfolds, and it's this aspect which makes the game so appealing. This really is one a cracking adventure. The visuals are superb, dark and atmospheric, but it's the story which is the real draw here. It's complex, mature and features lots of twists, turns and cliffhangers, and which will keep you hooked right to the end. If you're after something which doesn't require fast reflexes, but which will make you think, then this is definitely for you.
