Step back in time

The Ys series of adventures is a pretty legendary one, with the likes of YS Origin and YS: The Oath in Felghana being popular amongst followers of RPGs like Final Fantasy. This double pack is the perfect way for fans and newcomers alike to travel back to the start of the franchise and see how it all began, as what you have here is the two original games which started things off back in the late 1980s. They've been given a fresh lick of paint to make them more palatable to modern audiences, but the tough gameplay which encourages independent play remains, so if you like things easy, you might want to steer clear. The stories here are fairly typical for JRPGs like Secret of Mana, but given they're thirty years old, they still hold up well today, with lots of twists and turns and plenty of interesting characters to meet. The gameplay is also familiar stuff, with the usual mix of exploration and combat, but there are some interesting mechanics on display here, and with combat in particular requiring some careful strategy. These really are two classic games which deserve to be played by any fan of the genre. There's none of the hand holding associated with modern games, and you'll need to focus on dialogue and other elements every step of the way, but this only adds to the sense of immersion and enjoyment. The combat is satisfying and challenging, while the visuals are stylish and eye-catching, with some very impressive character work that helps bring things to life. All in all, a wonderful package of two old-school classics which should be part of any RPG fan's collection.
