African Raiders

Racing 1988 Dos Dosbox Tomahawk Car simulation Off road

A bit a bit more than could chew sprite racer

African Raiders wanted to simulate the world of free roaming racing, of sand racing, where there are no predefined tracks at times. This, as you'd expect can't really be done that great from the confines of a game that is built on face forward sprite graphics, and so, what you end up left with is a game that doesn't go out of its way to create a very engaging world; it's just sand dunes after sand dunes rendered as scrolling lines. Granted, at times you have portions that are track based which work much better with this technology, but you still have to put up with quite a bit of free roaming. Free roaming where you don't really have a compass, you just hope you're heading the right way! Well, as it is, I can't really recommend it unless you are interested in looking at how technology can be exploited and what can be done within some confines, and what doesn't work in the very same confines. No, if you want a sprite scroller extraordinaire, download OutRun, and leave this one for those times when you just want to muse on technology and history.
