Alien Logic

RPG 1994 Dos Dosbox Ceridus Software Action based Science Fiction

Old-school sci-fi

Although this might not as well known as other RPGs like the Dungeons & Dragons games or even Buck Rogers, but if you're looking for some seriously in-depth adventuring, it's hard to go wrong with this one. It's based the Skyrealms of Jorune system and combines a genuinely enthralling story with some pretty meaty RPGing to great effect. The game takes place on a distant world that is now home to humanity following the destruction of Earth, and plays out against a backdrop of an ancient civil war which is still being fought by some of the participants. When one of the planet's races attacks various settlements and kidnaps many innocent humans, it falls to you as one of the survivors to go and get them back. What follows is a classic RPG where your lone hero (no party system here) explores a mostly open world, searching for items and suchlike and defeating enemies in action-based fashion. There is a deep story to follow but there is a great sense of open-endedness too, and you are free to roam as you please, while other familiar fantasy elements include the use of magic during combat. Alien Logic is pretty old-school in both its looks and its gameplay, but if you are a retro fan of Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment, this will be right up your alley. It's not as good or as in-depth as these classics, but there's enough adventuring, questing and monster slaying to keep you entertained for some time. There's a bit of a lack of customization options, so check out Realms of Arkania if that's what you're into, while the visuals are definitely less than flashy, but when you want to kick it old-school, this should scratch that itch.
