American McGee's Alice

Action 2000 Windows Aspyr Media Horror Puzzle based

What Happened?

I saw some concept art of this game and I was admittedly a little bit curious. I know some old original fairy tales are supposed to have a dark edge to them compared to the modern kid-friendly versions. I haven't read the original Louis Carol book, but I'm sure there are some creative liberties taken. This game takes place after the first adventure into Wonderland, everything is nightmarishly twisted in some way, characters are distorted and grotesque versions of what we know. Everything familiar is taken away. I appreciate the idea that someone was trying to apply a new interpretation to an old and familiar, maybe even tired, idea. However, I just don't like it. I don't like where they were going with it. It's not enjoyable in the slightest. Beyond that, the gameplay is terrible, the controls are loose and hard to use, the weapons are ineffective, the platforming puzzles are needlessly difficult and the entire experience is something I wish I'd never had. There was a sequel put out about a year ago that had this game packaged with it. Just pass, neither of them are worth your time or money. Pick up a book, instead.
