Take a trip into a storybook world

The Book of Unwritten Tales series is a pretty decent set of humorous point-and-click adventures that bring to mind Monkey Island and Quest for Glory. This special edition of the second game in the franchise is worth picking up if you can get the physical version and are a big fan, as it contains a bunch of extras like an art book, poster and the soundtrack. The base game remains the same though and finds players caught up in a complex tale revolving around a plague which is threatening to take over the world. Several characters from the previous game, including the Critter Chronicles prequel, also pop up, so if you have played the earlier entries, you will get a lot more out of this one. What follows is a fairly traditional point-and-click adventure that, like the other games, very much focuses on humor and lots of pop culture references. There's the usual exploration and puzzle solving to be done, with a nice mix of inventory based ones and those involving dialogue, while the whole thing is played out against a lush backdrop of hand drawn images. This really is quite a charming adventure that is perfect for fans of Discworld and the like. The story is mostly compelling, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end, while the writing and characters are memorable and witty. The puzzles too are well integrated into the gameplay and are enjoyable and satisfying to solve, without the frustration often found in such games. When you throw in the lovely visuals you have all the makings of a top class adventure.
