War, what is it good for?
The first two Cannon Fodder games are classic action/strategy titles which play out like a mix of Dune 2, Lemmings and Ikari Warriors and which hail from the developers of the mighty Sensible Soccer. This third installment comes many years after the originals and doesn't have the Sensible touch to it but turns out to be a surprisingly decent game, if a little lacking in the earlier magic. The essential concept is the same as ever, with the player in control of a squad of four soldiers and where you must complete a series of tactical missions such as destroying buildings and fuel tanks or taking out enemy soldiers. The whole thing is played out in that familiar top-down perspective but with a slight 3D twist while there are now also boss battles to take care of, such as massive robot trains and so on. You've also got a wide array of inventive weapons to make use of while there are over twenty different locations to visit, including Russia, Asia, and the Moon. Cannon Fodder 3 is one of those sequels to a much-loved franchise that doesn't actually disgrace the memories of the originals. It doesn't stray too far from the template laid down by its predecessors but adds enough new elements to keep things fresh and interesting. The sense of humor evident in the first two titles remains while the mix of action and strategy is also well-handled, thanks to some nice level design and missions which keep you on your toes. The visuals are pretty nice too so all in all, if you're a fan of the series, this is well worth a look.
