No one can hear you scream
A masterclass is sustained terror, the original Dead Space is a classic horror experience that provides the purest thrills this side of Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Although little has changed in this sequel, there's no denying that this is perhaps an even better all round game which is even more terrifying and gripping than its predecessor. This one takes place a few years after engineer Isaac Clarke found himself facing off against hordes of vicious Necromorphs and who only just escaped. He now lives on The Sprawl, a vast city in space but as he is undergoing trauma counselling, another outbreak occurs and he once again finds himself facing the stuff of nightmares. For the most part, this plays and feels very similar to the original game, with the gameplay being a mix of third-person exploration, survival horror, light puzzle solving and of course, viciously stamping on Necromorphs until they pop. You've got a variety of weapons to help you out, but running is often the best solution to your troubles, while other additions this time include the ability to move in zero-g. Although the lack of progression from the first installment might be a little disappointing for some, there's no denying that this is a better all round experience. Everything is just more finely tuned and honed, making for a wonderfully tense and genuinely horrifying thrill ride. The visuals are still stunning, with beautifully hideous Necromorph designs and some wonderfully atmospheric environments which are truly haunting. All in all, this is perhaps the finest survival horror game out there.
