Flawed but fun apocalypse sim

Reminiscent of classics like Fallout and XCom, this zombie-themed survival game is an intriguing choice for fans of all things undead. It's got some neat ideas and features, but is also let down by a number of issues which prevent it from being as good as it could be. The game is set in a familiar post-apocalyptic world which has been overrun by zombies and places the player in Texas of all places. As society continues to break down around you, your basic goal is simply to survive which is achieved by defending your shelter your the hordes of shambling undead which come for you with alarming regularity. You also have to keep your allies happy by providing food and shelter which adds to the depth. Interestingly enough, there's also a heavy narrative element, with over 50000 lines of branching dialogue and a whole heap of complex well-written characters. Combat when it comes is turn-based, the management of the shelter requires plenty of job shuffling and resource juggling, and there are also lots of location to explore in search of goodies. If you like to make decisions in games, then this should be of interest. There are plenty of opportunities to exercise your mind here, with some genuinely interesting issues to consider. There's a real sense of building something good in the midst of the chaos, so it's just a shame that combat is such a let down. It's very tedious with a lack of depth that means it's rarely much fun, but if this doesn't bother you, then you should have a good time in this apocalypse.
