Cracking point-and-clicking

The Deponia trilogy is another modern take on that classic genre, the point-and-click adventure that is best typified by the Monkey Island games, Sam & Max and Fate of Atlantis. This is the second game in the series, and if you've played the first one, you're going to want to know how the epic story continues and which is handled in fine style here. If you're not in the know, the games are set on a trash planet and sees main character Rufus trying to escape from his miserable existence surrounded by garbage, while Goal is a girl who fell from her elite existence in the heavens and now seeks to return. This time around, Goal's memory has been damaged and must be stored on memory disks, which Rufus can access to help him solve various puzzles which are a little different from the usual type. There are also plenty of traditional inventory-based puzzles to solve, as well as those based on dialogue and logic, and even a few mini-games. Mostly living up to its predecessor's high standards, this sequel makes for a hugely entertaining adventure. The world that has been created here is wonderfully realized and continues to expand in interesting fashion, while the characters remain interesting, complex and believable. The graphics are also lovely, with a distinctive art style that packs a lot of personality, and with some beautiful environments that are a joy to explore. The variety of puzzles on display here too also adds much to the game's appeal so overall, this is a top-notch piece of point-and-click adventuring.
